Speaking about Writing at Medgar Evers College

This past November, I had the pleasure of speaking about writing in front of college students who take writing courses at Medgar Evers College in Brooklyn, NY! You never know how the people you are connected to will impact your life. A local writer and peer in my town, Kristin McGinn Mahoney (thanks, hun!), suggested me to Professor Cristina Migliaccio who needed a professional writer to speak about creating an online portfolio of your work, which can contribute to growing your professional writing career. I also spoke about using my personal life to inspire my writing, most recently writing about survivorship and being an advocate and voice for survivors of sexual abuse who are often silent in the shadows.

I think the best part of the evening was the one-on-one conversations I had with some of the students who approached me afterward to ask for advice or to give me feedback on how the presentation inspired them. As someone who has been an aspiring writer since she was a little girl, being able to talk to young adults about what I have learned over the years and how they too can attain their writing goals was an amazing moment. I'll be returning in 2020 to conduct two more workshops! A big thank you to Professor Cristina and the English Department at Medgar Evers!
